The 6-speed in the Camaro and Firebird allows for about a 3 mpg increase in
gas mileage over the auto. That's a pretty big difference. And they're a
lot of fun too:) Got to drive a '98 Corvette 6-speed this summer (buddy of
mine works at the Vette factory). I'd definitely get the 6-speed over the
auto.
On the topic of Dakotas: Has anyone ever had a problem with their clutch
sticking. About 2 months ago I returned home from a week-long vacation and
drove my '97 5-speed for the first time in over a week. After I had driven
it a few miles, I pulled out from a stop and the clutch stuck about
half-way out. So, I pushed the clutch back in and shifted to second. Same
thing. Then, third. Still stuck. So I pulled off on the side of the
road. The clutch really got burnt up bad. It smelled horrible. After I
let the truck sit for a minute, it worked fine and I've never had the
problem again. I took the truck in for them to check everything and they
said they found nothing wrong. I guess I'm just a little concerned since I
have 9000 miles on my truck and the clutch warranty expires at 12K. I know
that a good deal of mileage was taken off my clutch and I don't want to
have to replace it anytime soon.
