But most bodyshops use basecoat then clearcoat because it protects better
and last longer.

NOT TRUE!
You can get Alkyd enamel paint at any automotive paint shop to match any
Dakota color. And it will have all the gloss and shine of a clearcoat
paint job. ...and a whole lot cheaper.
Fiberglass does indeed need some work prior to painting, if it is raw
fiberglass. But most things like hoods are gel-coated these days, which
eliminates most if not all the hand work required.
