How often have you changed the xfer case lube?

The Dakota - at least since '90 or so, run the front diff, and the front
shaft of the transfer case all the time. And the rear propeller shaft
has a slip yoke - notorious for introducing dust into the xfer case.
As a result, it's a very good idea to change the xfer case lube about
every fourth or fifth time you change the motor oil, and more often in
dusty or after lots of off-road use.

Sounds like you've worn out the spring that holds the shifter in it's
detent, or the shift forks. It's also possible it's the rear tranny
mount, or a motor mount, which could cause the shift boot to push it
out of gear.

The transfer case uses ATF. I keep my fancy (read pricey$$) Mopar ATF
when I do a tranny service, and reuse it in the xfer case.
