I have wanted to set up a cowl induction system ever since I added the
big, open K&N FIPK. I wanted to make an opening in the firewall to take
advantage of the fresh air inlet at the base of the windshield. However,
have you looked at the firewall? On the left side we have the windshield
wiper motor (and the distributor below that on the engine). On the right
is something that looks like a toilet bowl float. There is really very
little room to make an opening. I sure didn't want to make on of those
ugly NASCAR cowl boxes,either. I think they're pretty ugly. I didn't want
to go to a cowl induction hood because that would tip my hand. In order
to help keep some cooler air going to the K&N, I left the stock air hose
that went to the snorkel and fixed it to send fresh air to the K&N.
I talked with Sean (Fresh Air by Meldrum) about this and he had the same
feelings, wanted outside air, didn't want a cowl hood, no space on the
firewall below the fresh air inlet.
He pointed me to Scott Miller's homepage (http://
members.tripod.com/~racetruck) where he set up a ram air system to his
Shelby Dakota using two of the stock air hose systems. He tells you
exactly how to adapt the grill on the left side so you can have two hoses
going to the filter. Sean then told me about the Ram Air Box and an
article in Mopar Muscle that installed one. They were very pleased with
the results and the "stealthiness" of the installation. The Ram Air Box
is a fibergalss unit made to surround a K&N FIPK or like device that
looks like the factory can only much larger (3" to 6") and with twin
snorkels (80 or 110 degree separation).
If you are interested, you can e-mail them (in Canada) at
ramairbx@wchat.on.ca
They won'r e-mail you back but will send a catalog. The catalog has
various hoses and inlets, etc. I'm going to go with the stock stuff like
Scott Miller.
Hope this helps.
