Take a deep breath Robert. Key word in my post: "CAR". I think Chrysler
is doing fine with the trucks, but their cars are not competitive in
terms of power with the other manufacturers "performance sedan" models
Chev, Ford and the imports all have a number of "sedans" that will turn
6-8 second 0-60 times; Chrysler has nothing, nada, squat. A Chrysler
equiv. of a Contour SVT - Nope. Taurus SHO - Nope. Caddy STS - Nope.
Nissan Maxima - Nope. Olds Intrigue - Nope. Grand Prix GTP - Nope.
Hardly looks "covered" to me...
As far as the Neon goes, its a good little car, but hardly "exceptional"
in the class. Chev is right there in terms of HP and performance with
the Z24 Cavalier, as are the imports from Honda, Nissan and Mazda.
Oh yea, while I have my soapbox out: As far as "winning" all of the SCCA
races, I have two words: Contingency Money. Chrysler plowed so much
money into contingency $$s for the various solo and racing series that
you'd almost be a fool not to run a Neon. When you have 90-95% of some
classes running Neons, the odds of a win are pretty good. I'm quite
familiar with solo II, and with a Neon ACR you could actually make money
running the series off of the Chrysler contingency $$$s. They were also
"discounting" the car if you promised to run it at the SCCA or CASC
(Canadian equiv of SCCA) regional level. I know a fair number of people
that bought them just for that reason; if other manufacturers had
matching $$$s, they wouldn't have been driving Neons...
Craig
P.S. One final thought: Its pretty sad when your mini-van is within 0.3
seconds 0-60 of your "touring car" convertible (Sebring).
