Well, I can give you what my '96 Technical Service Manual has. I don't
know if it has changed since '88, but I suppose it is a possibility. Some
of these are probably standardized, but I suspect the Dodge specific stuff
might change.
Position Interpretation Code = description
1 Country of Origin 1 = USA
2 Make B = Dodge
3 Vehicle Type 7 = truck
4 Gross Vehicle Weight F = 4001-5000lbs
Rating G = 5001-6000lbs
5 Vehicle Line G = Dakota 4x4
L = Dakota 4x2
6 Series 2 = L
7 Body Style 3 = Club Cab
6 = Conventional cab
8 Engine P = 2.5L
T = 5.2L (CNG)
X = 3.9L
Y = 5.2L
9 Check digit
10 Model Year T = 1996
11 Assembly Plant S = Dodge City Assembly
W = Toledo Assembly #3
12-17 Vehicle build sequence Assembly Sequence
I suspect a techincal service manual for the '88 would have this same
info for your model year. A slight digression if I might: Anyone who
doesn't have a technical service manual should get one! :-) Mine was
about $90, but it has been worth every penny. The manuals for years
earlier than 95 or 96 are considerably cheaper.
I hope this helps!
