I was told from a tranny shop that the OD is the biggest problem and
that when
they go the pieces go through the rest of tranny and kill it. As I
understand
your knowledge the pieces don't actually kill the rest of it but plug
the
filter causing the reaimder of the problems ? If this is the case then
as soon
as you notice a OD problem, if you shut it down and get it towed home
you
could save the rest of the thing ? The other shop had said that if you
caught
the OD problem and not drove it, that you could probably not destroy
the rest
which I didn't understand cause if any pieces got to other parts there
would
be problems but if they are caught by the filter then it would make
sense.
Is there any help for the OD problems ?<<
My experience: If I had know what to pay attention to when mine was
going bad (prior to
destroying the tranny) I could have saved several $.. Just how many is
merely speculation at
this juncture, but I feel like I clould have gotten by with less than
$300. The OD began to
not want to engage. After several days, I changed the fluid/filter,
and this helped quite a bit,
but it wasn't the same. Something was just different about the way it
went into OD, and I more
or less ignored it. One morning on the way to work I heard this
extremely high pitched whine
(not very loud, but noticeable) when it engaged in OD. It only lasted
for 5 minutes or less,
so again I ignored the warning. That afternoon the OD would not
engage, so when I got home
I changed the fluid/filter again. Nasty stuff - no odd smell - but
discolored, and lots of metal.
I knew then the end was near, but I just had to drive it one more
day. I barely made it home.
You know the rest.
If there's any redesign for the OD, I'm not aware of it. IMHO it is a
piece of junk - should never
have been put on the road by CC. It is made by New Venture Gear in
Syracuse NY and
shipped to Kokomo transmission in Kokomo, In. for installiation on the
trannys. Going to ruin
reputation of CC. The transmissions are basically the same design as
has been around
since the beginning of the modern torquflite. Gears and clutches
between the 727 and 518
and between the 904 and 500 are interchangable. Some of the shafts
have changed and the
case has changed, due to the addition of oil passages and the bolt on
OD at the rear.
If you suspect you have a problem, the OD can be removed with out
taking the tranny out.
Theres a spring in the OD unit that takes a special tool and a good
press to compress. It
has 800# tension on it, so be careful if you intend to take yours apart.
Oh by the way - thanks for the AAA rating.
