John,
I wrote Chrysler a letter after they canceled my R/T order.
Chrysler called me and they told me they will be making
2,000 R/Ts (1,700 club Cabs & 300 Regular cabs). Production will
start March 20th this Friday. Finished units will be shipped to
dealers based on previous Dakota sales. Since there are 2,400
Dodge dealers some dealers won't be getting any. Your best bet
is to go to the highest volume Dakota dealer in your area and put
a deposit down. I have already done this. Bad news is dealers
will probably $$queze you for every penny if this is true! I also
inquired about R/Ts being built in Sept (99 model year) but they
had no information as of 3/13/98. Again all this information was
from Chryslers accuracy is suspect since they have told so
many different stories.

I gotta admit I sure didn't smell this kinda rat when I blew away
any thoughts of getting an R/T and ordered a Sport+ last Oct when CC
delayed it til this spring. I did wait initially when they claimed
a 4X4 version would be available (Jan '97 press release). Well
if a 4X2 would of fit my bill, I'd be steaming right now for having
"kept the faith" even longer. The cancelling of orders and giving
the trucks to the dealers to gouge the public is real bad PR on CC's
part. I sure hope some of you have some sort of firm price quote
(relating to invoice) and I'd pursue it in court. The only honorable
thing to do is first come, first served on orders placed by the general
public. If you got a early order and you are the first one at a dealer
that gets one I'd be sure to use the local TV station if they try to
cancel it on you(offer to you at gouge prices).
