My first Dakota (an 87) had a long box, I even found a nice fiberglass
topper in excellent condition for it at a salvage yard...they only wanted
150 bucks for it as it only fits the Dakota and they had been sitting on it
for a while.

It was nice to carry 8' sheets of plywood in it with the tailgate up,
however the best thing about it was my jet-ski would fit in the back with
the tailgate up!
