Auto Trans Downshift Question - 98 4x4 w/5.2

When downshifting via throttle position (as opposed to column shift), is
the kick down controlled solely by throttle position, or does the CPU
also come into play?

Several times while merging onto the highway I inadvertently applied too
much throttle and the transmission kicked down into 1st, when 2nd is
what I really wanted. Result: engine bounces off redline and much time
wasted waiting for transmission to upshift into a more useful gear...

Does anyone know if the kick down into 1st can be adjusted to NOT engage
above a specified road speed?

I have the factory service manual, but probably won't be coherent enough
to read it until tomorrow. ;-)
