I'm not familiar with the pre 97' DAKs, but the 97-98s do not have
locking hubs. The drive shaft is bolted directly to the rotor via a
flange. (With some serious looking male-torx bolts). This is what allows
"shift on the fly" without having to remember to lock the hubs. Some
lower species of 4x4s use a vacuum actuated locking hub which adds more
parts and more things to go wrong.
The only real price we pay is gas mileage, as all that hardware is
spinning all the time. The "full time" option is simply the addition of
the 3rd differential to allow front and rear wheels to turn at different
speeds.
