I should have mentioned that "cut and splice" was required for the swap,
as the connectors are of different configuration.

Instead of cutting, you could use a very small flat screw driver blade, inserted
into the plug, to compress the locking tang, in order to remove the metal
connector. Once out, just bend the tang up a bit and insert into the destination
connector.
