So I guess I should take it by a dealer. I saw these computer code readers
at Wal-Mart but they were only for Fords and GMs. Anybody have any
suggestions about what I should do I dont want my dak to die and me be
stuck on the side of the road. THIS SUCKS

No idea what an automatic shutdown relay is, but according to my '96
manual, a 42 can mean one of several things:

  fuel pump relay control circuit
  auto shutdown relay control circuit
no asd relay output voltage at pcm
fuel level sending unit volts too low
fuel level sending unit volts too high
fuel level unit no change over miles

That really breaks it down, eh? :-) All these have a MIL code of 42,
but the hex code is different. I think you need one of the jobbies
that plugs in under the dash to read the hex code.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever tried to read the hex code from the
computer? Any ideas as to how to do it? I should think it would be
possible to homebrew something that'll do it...
