Pep Boys has Valvoline 10w-30 full synthetic where I live for around $3 a quart. Sometimes you can get a 6 pack of Castrol Syntech for around $22 and then send in the $3 rebate (if they still have it) and get it pretty cheap per quart.

Where are you buying this $3/quart synthetic? At that price, I'd actually
come close to breaking even with a 6000 mi. change interval.
