Dana Corp. makes some of the best filters under the Wix brand name, and they
also OEM to some of the parts houses like Car Quest (pretty sure theirs is a
Wix clone). Check http://www.dana.com/wix/wix.html . I think Gard Corp. makes
the NAPA vanity line of filters; also supposed to be good.

I don't think there's a huge advantage between filters, and assuming you
do your preventative maintenance on time, probably no big advantage to the
so-called high quality filters like Wix. The only reason I tend to favor
them is hearsay: supposedly Wix and the like are some of the most efficient
filters as far as filtration measured against resistance is concerned (it
does take some power to drive the oil through the filter). Wix filters also
tend to have heavier-gauge housings, spring anti-drainback valves, and bonded
metal end caps as opposed to flimsy housings, bent sheet metal valves, and
glued fiber end caps.

Again, buying the Mack Daddy oil filter isn't magic engine protection. You'd
probably be better off getting the cheapest filters but changing them out
regularly. But I sleep better knowing my oil filter has less probability of
blowing out.
