<<It sounds like you just removed the two bolts, pulled the thermo
housing up (with the upper hose still attached), cleaned the surfaces,
and replaced the thermo & gasket. Why did you need to drain the
radiator? I would think you could just top it off (however much you
lost when you pulled the upper hose off) and be done. Very curious.

Truthfully I wasn't sure if I needed to drain it or not, but I decided
it would be better to have the fluid on the floor (and some in the
bucket) rather than spilling all over the block/cylinder heads and
stuff... Radiator fluid really stinks when it burns off.
Sean M. had a better idea which was to simply use a siphon to lower
the level inside the radiator below the return hose/block... Seems to
me this would work fine and make it a clean and neat swap.
