Another consideration: Lower coolant temps wear out cylinder bores faster.
It's an exponential function, with coolant temps below 100 deg. F causing
dramatically (on the order of 100 times, if I remember the graph correctly)
increased wear. But even w/ a coolant temp of 160 deg. bore wear will be
something like twice what it is at 195 deg. As I recall, the mechanism at
work is increased brittleness (relatively speaking) of iron at the lower
wall temps, which causes increased galling on the microscopic level.
For the longest bore life, higher coolant temps are desireable (up to the
ability of the oil to do its job).
