I think that early on people were exploding the Syclones due to too
aggressive a fuel curve or some other mod that leaned the mixture. With
tight piston to wall clearance, as you say, they didn't tolerate very
much detonation at all before going "boom". One of the first things I
purchased was a air fuel mixture monitor. It had both visual and audible
warnings. If you were gettin' on it and it started beeping at you, it
was time to take your foot out of it even if you couldn't hear the
rattle!

I think some of the later generation chips addressed the problems with
better fuel curves and you didn't hear about as many grenade jobs.

Hey, I like the simplicity of noramlly aspirated as much as the next
guy. Any time you add something more complicated or aggressive such as a
turbo, supercharger, NO3, etc. it all comes down to how you work with
it. Put the wrong toys in the wrong hands and you can grenade just about
anything. I did like my Typhoon alot. Other than the annoying tendancy
to eat starters, it wasn't too bad mechanically. At 100K it was still
running the stock turbo, though that could have been considered a
ticking bomb with that many miles<g>.
