Moving Distributor

I have a technical tidbit to enter, and this might possibly be the
end to many threads. I invite any replies that would contradict my
information!
While perusing some repair information on my truck at work (we have
mitchell-on-demand, repair manuals on cd-rom) I came across a TSB
directly from Chrysler. Chrysler states that turning the distributor
has no affect on timing, and this is true since the computer uses a
trigger to signal the module to fire, and the timing and advance is
all calibrated by th computer. Chrysler then states that turning the
distributor affects FUEL SYNCRONIZATION. If you have a scanner hooked
up to the computer port, you can access the range that the fuel sync is
in and set it properly. The computer on the truck has an "in-range"
value that can be set by turning the distributor, and the scanner will
read this change in degrees.
  Wow!
I guess the computer uses this to determine exactly when to fire
the injectors in relation to the valves closing, etc.
Which leads me to a question....

Can you turn the distributor to increase the perfomance on a vehicle
that has an upgraded computer with more advance-either delivering
the fuel a tad bit earlier or a tad bit later to increase performance?
Any takers out there want to be the guineau pig? Probably ought to
be someone who races a lot and has a very consistent ET.
Oh, Boy, here we go again.....

Patrick
