I just changed the filter for the first time on my 98 Dakota V-8. No problems.
It helps if you have a good oil filter wrench, not one of those piece of crap
strap ones. Get one (metal or plastic) that is specifcally sized for the filter...
fits over the base of the filter and uses a 3/8" ratchet to drive it. You can get them
at Schucks, NAPA, PEP boys, etc. Pull a filter off the shelf that fits your truck to
ensure you buy the right sized one. Don't use a screwdriver until ALL has failed....
it is extremely messy, and doesn't work anywhere as good as you might think... once
you penetrate the wall of the filter, it tends to tear easily. My V-8 has the filter in
a place where it would be difficult to get the screwdriver into the side of the filter
to use it for leverage.
