It seems like times have changed. I bought my first car (like you at 18)
in 1970. It was a 62 VW beetle that I scrimped and saved up to buy (I
worked in a corner store for minimum wage). It cost $600. Used it to
commute to university and to go skiing .... never got stuck in the snow.
Five years and 60,000 miles later I bought a brand new 1974 Datsun pickup
for $3,400. Since then, all I could afford was used vehicles (house, wife,
kid etc.) until my 1997 Dak.
