Cat converters Suck

Hey gang,
what does a worn out cat sound like? I'm getting what sound like "valve
chatter" form under my truck, and it gets louder when I accelerate. Inany
situation where more air might flow through my exhaust, the noise gets
more present. Does a bad converter result in loss of performance? Man,
I really don't want to replace something ELSE on my truck =(
