Yours sounds a lot worse than some *minor* ping I used to get and with the
miles on your rig it's probably more involved, but I slapped a pair of
exhaust headers (JBA) on my V8 and I don't even have a hint of ping anymore
and I still run 87 oct. gas...
This is probably a last resort after cleaning and making sure your
injectors are up to snuff... All I can say is it worked for me and I don't
mind the improved performance either.

All -
I just found this site ... Thanks, Jon!
I've got a '93 Dakota with the 3.9L that pings (ie, pre-ignition)like crazy if
fed anything under 92 octane. It's got 54K miles on it and was driven gently and
fed CHEAP gas for it's first 30K or so. I assume the pinging is due to carbon
deposits in the engine. Is this a correct assumption? Can a lean mixture
(from, say, dirty injectors) cause pinging?
Other than tearing the heads off and mining the pre-diamond deposits off of the
pistons,
what can be done? I've tried a few of those "cleaners". They work for awhile,
but
then the racket comes back.
Thanks
