Jon
There are suspension differences for the Dak after '96.
I can't specifically speak for the '96 as I have a '97
but the following will apply no matter what the suspension
specs.
The ideal for any tire and wheel combo is to have as
close a match between the tread width and the rim width.
This allows for a vertical sidewall (excluding the natural
bulge of a tire). Therefore, a tread width of 8" should
ideally be put on an 8" rim. Tire dealers generally
brochures for a tire brand. Brochure will usually have
a table listing approved rim width with a tire size.
e.g. Firehawk SS, P275/60x15, approved rim width 7.0-11.0
The '97 Dak (don't know about the '96) has a speedometer
pinion which dictates if you get an accurate speed reading.
Which pinion is dependent on the outer diameter of the rear tire.
There are 3 such pinions available from Mopar parts dept.
One is for the stock P215/75x15 ... outer diameter about 27.8"
One for the stock P235/70x15 ... outer diameter about 28.2"
One for the stock P235/75x15 ... outer diameter about 29"
Hope you find another DMLer with specifics to your needs, otherwise it's
follow the old rule; measure carefully and then measure again.
