What is with this blah, blah-didi, blah, blah about the Americans did this
and the Canadians did that?! The trivia is kinda cool, but this
nationalistic stuff is ridiculous. Canucks are more like brothers than
foreigners... Hell, Texans are more like cousins :-) <--- notice, notice!

Our national interests are inextricably tied geographically, politically,
economically and ideologically. Moreover, Canucks are just good people on
the whole and they definitely have a better railroad! So if they helped us
out and we helped them out, COOL! It's the way it ought to be!

Russ:

I noticed the smiley face. Facts to also remember, the Alaska Highway was
a cooperative venture, albeit mostly paid for by the US, but built by
Canadians as well. Canadians also fought the Japanese in the Aleutians and
had the third largest navy in the world at the end of WWII (yes, US had the
largest). Also, the west coast of Canada was shelled by a Japanese
submarine (Estevan Lighthouse). During WWII Russia was allied to Britain,
commonwealth countries and the USA. Also don't forget the airfields build
to ferry (woman pilots) aircraft built in the US and Canada to the eastern
front for the Russians to fight Germany.

The Alaska Highway is still a major route for transport of goods to Alaska
from the US. Don't forget about the NORAD early warning system of the cold
war days .... in northern Canada.

Conclusion, both countries got a pretty good deal out of it.

Next question .... what did they do with much of the construction
equiptment when they finished constructing the Alaska Highway?

DAK Content: you guys with 2wd can drive to Alaska.
