Took my fan and shroud off about fifteen times this last racing season. You
can hold the pulley by putting a wrench on one of the pulley bolts and then
placing the wrench ("bar" part of the wrench) against the next clockwise
bolt. Use a straight, flat wrench - the longest you can. I thought of this
later - if you had a problem with the bar part of the wrench slipping over
the bolt head it was pushing against, you could put a socket on that nut to
give the wrench more area to push against. If you don't turn the bolt at
the end of the wrench too much, you shouldn't have to re-torque it. Better
yet, you can use an oversized wrench, and it won't turn the bolt head at
all.

        You guys are saviours!

Now that someone has confirmed the way to do it, I'll try
again......I was
trying to avoid damaging the pulley, but it sounds like the only way
to do
        it....

Thanks very much for such quick feedback!
