Not to be mean, but he might try engaging the clutch when he shifts.
I have 101500 miles on my '95, 5.2L (260hp), 5 speed. Still on the
original clutch, and have approx. 20 runs down the 1/4 mi. Add
the daily hard launches from red lights, towing 4500# boats, numerous
1st-2nd-3rd scratches, etc. etc. Rock solid.
Don't know what else could be the problem. There isn't a recommended
interval for transmission fluid either... (Though I did it at 66k miles,
and it runs $15.50 a quart x 4 quarts).
