I had a Gibson 3" single catback installed last Friday and I experienced
the same thing with the homegrown K&N cone on my V8 dak. It seemed like
the lowend (sub 2k rpm) was just plain gone. I spend a *lot* of my time
in traffic commuting, and need that off-the-line grunt without having to
fillup the tank every other day. I was convinced (after reading tons of
mail in the dml archive) that it was not enough backpressure and was ready
to scrap out the 3" and buy a 2.5" system somewhere.

But before I did that, I wanted to throw the stock airbox back in to check
just_in_case that had something to do with it. Surprise! low end grunt is
back. Ended up scrapping the cone filter and putting in a drop-in replacement
K&N in the stock airbox.

So, this worked for me...but YMMV.

And btw, that Gibson sounds great. I was hoping to get a good reading on
whether my gas mileage improved, but ended up sitting in traffic for 45 mins
watching the avg econ # dwindle :(

Cheers,
fish
