Some details about carbon deposit build-up.

With high mileage vehicles, carbon build-up in the cylinder
walls and piston heads may be enough to raise the compression
of the engine so that pinging occurs when running with the recommended
fuel octane. Hence the suggestions to try another brand of gasoline
or to switch to a higher octane or to use an octane booster.

When the above fails, remedies in the above situation are to
use a thicker head gasket in order to lower the compression or to
tear the engine apart and clean away the deposits.

When cleaning up the throttle body, it is sometimes necessary to
remove the throttle body in order to do an effective clean-up.
This is because the deposits accumulate the most on the underside
of the throttle plate and around its edges. It is also important
to clean the walls of the throttle body especially where the
throttle plate comes to rest. If this is not done, eventually
the plate closes up prematurely and prevents sufficient air from
coming through when it has to.

Braking fluid, laquer solution and even gasoline can be used
to clean off the deposits.

That's the extent of my knowledge. Anyone care to add?
