I R&R´d the front third member without a hitch. The Chrysler 7.25 really is
a puny, wimpy diff. I´d checked out the internals of the used one, and it
was pristine - the C-clips that hold the axle shafts in were still plated.
There were a few bits of chrome plating flaked off the pinion shaft, but
you can only get a new one with a complete spider gear set (over $250).
It´ll have to do. I do wish I´d changed the right axle seal. It leaks. Sigh.
I changed out all the U-joints on the front driveshaft with greasable parts
from NAPA. I tried hard to insure the zerks were clocked out of sequence,
and it seems I got the shaft balanced pretty well - up to about 90 mph, at
least.
So now I have to check it out. Any San Diego list members interested in
going to the desert over the holidays? I´m going to Julian to play in the
snow Christmas Eve, and to Truckhaven on the 27th to scout for a Pig Roast.
Also planning a trip to the Orocopia Mtns, and the rock show in Quartzite,
AZ for the weekend of January 9-10.
Have a great Holiday season folks! Merry Christmas!
