I would think that buying a new 5.2L engine (if you are able) would be
very expensive. You would also have to replace the computer, manifold,
distributor and plug wires. Installation costs would be something else
to consider if it's not a self-install.

I would also imagine that getting one from a junk yard would be expensive
and difficult as well. You say that dependability is a major issue, so
can you ever be sure how much internal damages may have been done.

Unless there is really a pressing need for the v8, I would personally
wait until I could afford to buy a new truck. By that time, the new v8s
will have been out for a while and you can benefit from the technicological
improvements.

I'll be interested to see what kind of responses you get from the list
as well.
