Has anyone checked with one of the high-perf/race auto trans companies like Art Carr or TCI? They may well know of and have a fix for this problem.
In a recent article comparing 2 GM o'dive auto trannys, the Art Carr people indicated that lockup-style torque convertors are very hard on transmissions. They recommend eliminating the lockup feature. TCI folks suggest certain mods so the trans is not oil-starved during lockup. Both companies offer durability mods to popular automatics. Maybe they have something to help this problem.
