Hey, no offense Michael,
Sounds as though we're comparing apples to water melons when it comes to
each others applications. You're running a blown engine where tweaking
timing is a way of life. I'm essentially running an unaspirated daily
driver with the following mods: MOPAR computer, headers, cat-back and
under drive pulleys.
Your absolutely right about the difficulty involved in accessing and
adjusting the timing retard pot; i.e., it's small, touchy and hard to
adjust, especially depending upon where the box is mounted in the engine
bay. I use this feature as an anti-theft control. I adjusted it once
and haven't messed with it since. It can be set at a predetermined rpm,
and the engine will crap out if some slime bag tries to drive away my
ride.
Was your Crane Hi-6 an inductive or capacitive discharge system? This
could also make a big difference. According to Crane's tech rep, the
inductive system is more "streetable", and allegedly better suited to
mildly modified engines.
Didn't mean to bruise your feelings. I will, however, vehemently stand
by one opinion expressed. The Jacobs Omni Pak was an unreliable dog.
Although, as alluded to in my original post, bragging on component
reliability/performance often is the kiss of death.
