Need Help!-Adjusting the Bands

What are they talking about in the 98 FSM for adjusting the transmission
bands?! The first parts says to tighten the adjustment screw as follows:

Pg 21-175

Rear Band Adjustment
(1) Raise Vehicle.
(2) Remove pan, etc, etc,
(3) Loosen the locknut, etc, etc,
**(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 Nm (72 in. lbs.)**

..So far so good, but in the very next paragraph it says...

42/44RE Transmission (I have the 44RE)
***Back off adjusting screw 4 turns.***

Is this right? First you tighten it down then loosen it up?? It sounds
like one of the Raiders of the Lost Arc flicks... You know the one, one
side of the medallion says build the shaft to six cubits but the other side
says take back three cubits or something like that! :-)

Please! Any experts out there please let me know what's goin' on!

Thanks.

Tom
