Loud Exhaust (Answer?)

OK, here's the deal. Took my Dak to the local muffler shop (Monroe)
yesterday and asked them to check for a leak. They put it up on the lift and
blocked the tailpipe, result: They heard nothing. No leak What so ever. The
mechanic told me what the problem might be is that unburned fuel was
igniting in the pipes (y-pipe area and collector) and that would cause the
loud, resonating sound I am hearing. A few things that lead me to believe
this might be the fact is that when I bought the truck about a month ago,
the dealer told me he put a new muffler on it which I verified by a visual
inspection. Yet, when I took it in for the required new registration
inspection, I was told that the baffles in the muffler were blown out and
they asked me if I had a warranty on it. Also, my fuel mileage is pretty
poor (about 12 mpg for a V6) and the inside of my tailpipe is really black
(like unburned fuel black). My question is has anyone else heard of or
experienced this problem?
P.S. Any other New England DML'ers out there?

Thanks in advance to all my fellow DML'ers!

Mitch
