The more I think about my stalling problem, the more it seems to point
to the camshaft position sensor. The dealer's parts department was closed
by the time I got out of work, so I figured I'd stop by Autozone and see
if they sold anything. According to their computer, this sensor isn't
required! My FSM seems to indicate otherwise. :-) I thought maybe
there was some sort of change what with OBD-II and such, so just for kicks,
I had him look up the same part on a '95. Same deal; camshaft position
sensor was "not required". At this point, I become even more sceptical.
When I got home, I pulled off the cap and rotor, and sure enough, there's
a little "disk" on there with a "hall" type sensor on it, and a wire that
leads out to a harness. I'm inclined not to believe Autozone; I'm not
aware of a manufacturer who would spend money to buy and install
unnescessary parts in their vehicles. ;-)
I'll check at the dealer tomorrow to see what they've got. Anyone know
about how much this thing should cost?
BTW: I drove the truck around today with my newly installed fuel pressure
guage. I'm getting about 46-47psi at idle, and 50-51 while driving around.
I get quite a bit of mild backfiring and popping, especially when the
engine is cold, mostly when shifting or decellerating. I can also smell
fuel if I stop, then turn with the windows open. (At an intersection, for
example.) Could those symptoms also be caused by a malfunctioning cam
position sensor?
