Well your 215's(I am also assuming 14" rims) are about 27.5" in diameter and
about 7.5" wide. If you want any larger size, you need to upgrade to 15"
rims, I do not think nor do I know of anyone who make 30/31" tires that will
fit on 14" rims. 30x9.50's are about 29.5" in diameter and about 9.5" wide.
LT235's are basically 29x9.5's, that are also 9.5" wide. So, as far as power
loss with gears.....going from 215's to 235's you will loose about 200 RPM at
55 mph, really not that much; but you will still notice the loss of power at
lower speeds. Going from 215's to 30's you will lose about 275 RPMs and have
to deal with the great rolling resistance of the larger diameter tire. With
the 30" tires, gear ratio a of 4.27 would restore some power and with 235's a
gear ratio of 4.10 would help to restore power. Hope this helps with your
decision.
