  If I had to estimate your problem, I would say that it is the
synchros. I had a similiar problem that started out the same way that
yours is, but it led to my 4th gear as well. I ended up replacing all
synchros! It first started the way you described it, then one day I
went from 2nd to 3rd and I got the horid grinding and then it went in
but felt really spongy! Bad feeling! I would have it checked out
before it gets the rest of your gears!
