I have been back to 3 dealerships a total of 9 times. They flashed the
computer, reran the wires,
upgraded the software and still I continue to sound like a diesel. Since I
have 20K miles I was thinking to change the plugs anyway.

If your '99 Dakota is pinging, i'd take it back to the dealer and have them
take a look before you start changing parts around. It's better to get to
the root of the problem rather than just hiding it (in this case with
colder plugs).
