Sorry for the delayed reply (did not have my FSM for quite a while).

The ASD relay (located in the Power Distribution Center) is used
to supply 12 volt + battery voltage to both of the oxygen sensor heater
element, ignition coil and fuel injectors.

The ground circuit for the coil in the ASD relay is controlled by the PCM.
The PCM operates the relay by switching the ground circuit on and off.
(I've not included the details of how/where this switching is done.)

One of the input pin connectors in the PCM is used to sense whether
the ASD relay is energized. If the PCM does not see 12 volts at
this input when the ASD should be activated, it will set a DTC.

When the PCM records a system or senor malfunction, the PCM determines,
in some cases, when to go into limp-in mode (FSM is very secretive
when it will occur).
