Detonation is just like it sounds, the air-fuel mixture literally EXPLODES
in the cylinder, causing an extreme rise in temperature and pressure... in
normal operation of an internal combustion engine, the mixture burns in a
controlled fashion, with a flame front travelling across the cylinder.
Minor detonation is known as pinging, and occurs when most of the mixture
has already burned, or when two parts of the flame front collide. Another
term you will hear is preignition, which is when some "hot spot" in the
combustion chamber ignites the mixture before the spark plug fires, which
can lead to detonation as well.
