Where do you live? MassBuy in MA will get you $100 over invoice (check out
www.massbuy.com), whatever you want (course that means $100 over invoice PLUS
National Advertising Cost (yeah, right, really is just extra profit) which is
$275 at the dealer I'm working with, but that's still not too bad). But you
can figure, each $100 you pay costs you about $2/month or so in payments (at
least for me, which is 7.25% for 6 years). So unless you're saving $500 or
more, pick a dealer you like (yeah, right, again!) and take your best shot.
In reality, if you order instead of buy off the lot, the dealer is already
making at least 3% on the vehicle if not more if you pay invoice!, because
they get to keep the holdback and just have to process the vehicle straight
through (don't have to pay anything to keep it on their lot). Depending on
availability and how many vehicles a dealer sells, and how desparate they are
to reach some dealer incentive, they may even accept an offer less than
invoice!
Depends on the dealer and your area though. Some dealers can't afford to
deal like that, they don't sell enough cars, or it's just their business
practice, they'd rather make and higher profit, and won't waste their time on
people who try to stick it to them.
