I can say with 100% certainty that rack and pinion on a 4X4 was NOT an
option in 98, unless it was an end of year item. My 98 4X4 has a
recirculating ball steering box.
I had the intermediate shaft replaced twice, and finally the steering column
in my truck for the clunk problem. The steering column is what fixed it in
my truck. Yours may be different. I also had all of the ball joints and the
idler arm replaced due to excessive wear and rattling in the suspension at
23K miles. All this on a truck that went off road once, if you can call a
dirt trail off road, and that was within the first 1500 miles of it's life.

98 Dak 4X4 CC Sport, 5.2L, Auto, Leach headers, F&B TB (Oh Yeah!), DDBC, two
intermediate shafts and one steering column replaced. Seems to be running
pretty damn good today :)
