I read a similar article a few months back. Granted, it may not work in all
cases...but here's the funny thing with the Phantom I own:

(1) It doesn't "Blip or Beep" at every 7-11 store (or supermarkets)
(2) It has, so far, detected every police car, that had some sort of radar
enabled
and....
(3) Has saved my butt on several occasions...so far

One interesting chain of events that had happened to me on a trip down I-71.

My buddy and I (also a Dakota) were playing around on the highway (at about
80mph) and all of a sudden the X-Band light turns ON on my Phantom (and
Beeps). The scrambler light turns ON as well. A few seconds later the
K-Band light turns ON (scrambler light as well), then...KA and the scrambler
light is beeping furiously! I slowed down to about 70, looked to my left,
and zipped by a State Trooper looking slightly confused. NO TICKET FOLKS!

Now it may be that I have a good one...maybe I was just lucky...but that was
proof enough for me. (Results may vary)
