I've owned a '97 V6 Dakota with 5 speed (AX-15). I'm not sure if
the 99's have a different tranny now, but NO, it doesn't sound normal.
What your describing sounds more like sparknock or pinging. You might
try a higher octane fuel to see if this solves the problem.
