It all has to do with weight transfer. when you accelerate from a stop in
1st gear, the truck "squats" (transfers weight to the rear), providing
more traction. When you do the same thing in reverse, it "dives"
(transfers weight to the front), leaving almost no weight over the drive
wheels. A friend of mine used to have a Geo Tracker, and he could only
peel out in reverse. I am surprised, however, that you can't roast 'em in
1st.
