JMHO, the Dak is an excellent road trip vehicle! In June, I took a 2 week driving vacation in Montana (from Portland, OR). I came back loving my Dak more than ever. It's almost ridiculously comfortable to be driving for 12 hours. Due to breaking my back when I was 14, it's uncomfortable for me to sit for long periods, but the Dak seat is so comfortable, it doesn't cause problems. Montana is a high altitude, mountainous state (hence the name), which didn't bother my little 6er at all. It gave me no trouble at all, and took me down some pretty rough roads (including the ones that turned out to be ski trails), plus the bed is a comfortable length to sleep in. I only wish I had cruise control.

Joe, I thought I was sending the e-mail just to you, my mistake, but it
did get me some good feedback. I know your right that any manufacture
can have a day full of problems with the assembly line. I'm primary
looking for a truck for weekend use, mainly camping and to get to river
accesses for canoeing. I don't plan on towing anything. I want at least
as much horsepower as my '88 Jeep has, which I believe is 177, for
getting up and over hills in the Ozarks. That quickly knocked out a lot
of the smaller pickups. I had it down to a Dakota (w/ a V8), Sonoma/S-10
and Tacoma. In Consumer Reports the Tacoma and Dakota had significantly
less repairs than the Sonoma/S-10. I was surprise at how close the
Dakota rated in quality to the Tacoma. In short what it comes down to
for me is the longer history of "reliability" of the Tacoma, with the V6,
versus the bigger, more versatile Dakota 4.7. That is why I'm looking at
sites like this for information to help make the decision. I keep
thinking even though, I really like the Dakota I would be kicking myself
if I started having problems and then got jerked around by a dealer and
wished I would have gone with a Tacoma. Of course that could happen the
other way around too.
One of the main reasons I'm going to get a truck soon is next summer I'll
be driving to Alaska, for a 5 week trip, from St. Louis. That is why I
used the term "reliable". I'd hate to be broke down on the Dalton
Highway.
Martin, Your absolutely right. The Tacoma's interior is not early as
nice as the Dakota. That is one of the things I keep kicking around.
The Tacoma might be more likely to get me there and back without any
hassles, but getting there in the Dakota would be a lot more comfortable.
