The 180 is the temperature that the T'Stat opens at...this doesn't mean that
it'll run at 180. Normally, 185-190. This is why we change the 190-195
T'Stats on out trucks to the 180. (190-195 = 200-210 on the average on
operating temperature.) The factory gauges are not that accurate...but
pretty close. Take a Thermometer, open the radiator cap, stick it in there,
run the truck until it gets warm, and watch what happens to the needle when
the coolant starts to flow (T'Stat in the OPEN position). You can use a
Turkey Thermometer if need since they go way past 250 (350+). (I still have
my Automotive Thermometer for that purpose.)
