Damn, I'll have to check mine now... I figured the ones that were breaking
were the pre-threaded ones that people bent up. Jon, when you made yours did
have to fiddle with the bends and maybe fatigue the metal too much? Where did
it break?

One problem is that it can be hard to bend the threaded rod without messing
up the threads. Another is that having it threaded the entire length will
probably make it weaker than a similar S-bolt which is "solid"; and
threaded only at the ends.
What I used for mine was a piece of solid steel rod from a hardware store,
which I bent and threaded. Unfortunately it broke, so now the search is on
for something stronger.
