Well I decided to pull all the tires off my Dak this morning to see how all
the brakes look. I found that the front pads were very close to digging into
the rotors, so I exxhanged the worn ones for some really nice and thick new
pads. I am still on the factory rotors at 115,000 miles also. I only had to
turn them once when the pad housings dug into them ever-so slightly. I
bought lifetime pads along along time ago, and havent had to pay anything
for pads since. I did notice though that I had a small leak on the pass side
caliper, thankfully once again I had a lifetime warranty on them also from
when the factory one went bad awhile back. The caliper bolts were rusted
alittle too much for my taste, so I bought 4 new ones, lubed em up good, and
put them on. So I put the new pads on along with the new caliper, bled the
front outs, put the tires back on, and moved onto the rear brakes. Well as I
suspected, the 55,000 mile old shoes were also shot and were tearing up the
original factory drums, which couldnt be turned anymore anyways. I called
around and bought 2 new Bendix drums for only $65(for both!!).
Unfortunately, the rear wheel cylinder on the passenger's side was leaking,
so I decided hell, I just going to replace the wheel cylinders on both
sides. They are only $10 a piece, so it is cheap insurance. New brake shoes
once again were free, since I bought the lifetime shoes. The new ones the
parts guy gave me were labeled heavy/severe duty and he said these are the
latest ones that Raybestos are recommending. They were $8 more, since they
are upgraded pads with once again, lifetime warranty. I also had to buy new
little adjuster cable plates(not really sure what they are called), since
they were worn down alittle bit and were not holding at all. Well here is
the bad part, I broke off the passenger's side brake line where is goes into
the wheel cylinder, so I have to wait till the morning and hopefully the
dealer or someone will have a direct fit replacement line. This is the line
that goes from the brake line junction box on the rear axle and connects
into the right side cylidner. Oh well, that will only be a 20 minute swap,
then a good brake fluid bleed job and I am done. These better really grab
now!!! Here are the parts I used and prices. It's Miller Time........
New Pads: $8
New Caliper: $0
2 New Wheel Cylinders: $21
Adjsuster Cable Plates: $3.50
Bendix Drums(2): $65
New Caliper Bolts/Pins(4): $7
